Deputy Jennifer Traub

While on routine patrol, Deputy Traub was driving down the road and stopped due to traffic congestion. A vehicle behind Deputy Traub had also stopped due to the traffic congestion. The suspect was driving down the road and failed to stop in the assured clear distance ahead, and collided with the vehicle behind Deputy Traub's cruiser. That vehicle was then shoved forward into the rear end of Deputy Traub's cruiser, causing it to rotate and collide with the vehicle in front of her. The suspect was found to be intoxicated and charged with DWI along with other traffic charges. Deputy Traub was transported to the hospital with neck and back injuries. She is expected to make a full recovery and return to work.

Patrolman Vargas was injured when his cruiser was struck head on by another vehicle which crossed a double yellow line. The driver of the other vehicle was killed in the accident. Patrolman Vargas was hospitalized for two to three days with severe lacerations to his head.

Deputy Hodess was struck by a vehicle and critically injured when he stopped to assist a
disabled motorist. Deputy Hodess was on his way to work in his cruiser when he stopped, and as he was retrieving flares from his trunk another vehicle struck the rear of his cruise, trapping him between the two vehicles. The impact caused Deputy Hodess' head to strike the windshield of the other vehicle, causing facial lacerations. He was transported a local hospital where doctors were forced to amputate both legs below the knees. The driver of the vehicle was not charged initially but is currently under investigation.

Trooper Sanders was seriously injured after her Chevrolet Caprice cruiser was struck from behind by a drunk driver. Trooper Sanders had made a traffic stop on the left shoulder of I-95 and was sitting in her cruiser behind the vehicle when the drunk driver swerved onto the shoulder and struck her. The impact pushed the burst the cruiser into flames and pushed it into the other vehicle. Trooper Sanders was rescued by two passersby and admitted to a local hospital in critical condition with burns to thirty percent of her body. The accident occurred less than a tenth of a mile of where Trooper Robbert Smith was killed under the same circumstances on July 26, 1997.

Suspect Info: Shot and killed by Officer Reynolds
Officer Reynolds was wounded after being stabbed twice by a man he was arresting for drunk driving. Officer Reynolds responded to a call of an intoxicated driver in a supermarket parking lot. Officer Reynolds stopped the man and asked him to sit in the cruiser. Once the suspect entered the cruiser he pulled out a knife and stabbed Officer Reynolds in the throat and hand. Officer Reynolds was able to exit the cruiser at which point he shot and killed the suspect. Officer Reynolds was treated and released from a local hospital.



Sergeant Dean Scoville

Sergeant Scoville was shot and wounded after responding to a person with gun call. While en route officers were advised that the person was circling the house and attempting to enter. Several shots were fired by the suspect who successfully gained entry into the location. Upon officer's arrival Sergeant Scoville and the deputies approached the location. As they did, the suspect charged toward them, firing a rifle. Fragments from a bullet struck Sergeant Scoville in the left lower leg. Sergeant Scoville and the deputies returned fire, took cover and contained the location. After a 9 hour standoff the suspect surrendered. Sergeant Scoville was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Suspect Info: Variety of felony & misdemeanor charges
Officer Sciandra was assaulted and injured while attempting to remove three people from a night club at which he and another officer were moonlighting at. After the suspects disobeyed bouncers' orders to leave Officer Sciandra and the other officer attempted to remove him from the property at which point a scuffle ensued. Officer Sciandra was struck in the head by one of the suspects and knocked unconscious. The other officer was able to gain control of the situation and take the suspects into custody. All three suspects were arrested for a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges. Officer Sciandra was treated at a hospital and released.

Trooper Blackmon was shot and wounded after a shooting outside of a busy hotel party. Daytona Beach officers were called to the scene after a bystander saw a man flash a gun. As the officers were escorting the suspect outside he produced the weapon and opened fire. The two officers who were escorting him were both struck in the chest but their bulletproof vests stopped the rounds. Trooper Blackmon, who was standing across the street was struck in the arm. Another officer was grazed in the back of the head. All of the officers returned fire, killing the suspect. After the shooting the party-goers at the "Black College Reunion" started throwing bottles at the officers and shouting "Rodney King," prompting other officers to respond in riot gear.

Officer Perry was injured when his cruiser was broadsided by a tractor trailer which had run a stop sign at 60 mph. Officer Perry was able to see the semi coming and immediately accelerated to attempt to avoid a collision. The truck, however, struck the rear of the cruiser, ripping off the entire rear portion. The cruiser was pushed across the highway and into a ditch. Officer Perry was able to exit the cruiser but his partner, Officer Anthony Porta, was trapped inside for over an hour. Both officers were airlifted from the scene. Charges against the truck driver are pending.
