Chief of Police Gregg died on April 4, 1998, from a heart attack which suffered on April 2, 1998, while directing traffic for a funeral procession. Chief Gregg was laid to rest with full police honors.

Deputy Weinke was killed in an accident while responding to back up another officer at a
domestic disturbance call at approximately 04:30 hours. The accident occurred about five miles north of Sauk City on US Highway 12. As Deputy Weinke was responding his cruiser struck another vehicle and he was killed instantly. He was the first Sauk County deputy killed in the line of duty since 1984. He is survived by his wife, two young children, and his parents.

Officer Delgado was killed when the vehicle he was riding in was struck broadside by a drunk driver who had run a red light. Officer Delgado had checked in for duty only minutes before the accident and was being driven to another officer's residence to pick up a cruiser for his shift. Officer Delgado was killed instantly upon impact. The vehicle which struck Officer Delgado's vehicle was traveling at 80 mph at the time of impact. He had graduated from the department in November of 1997. Officer Delgado is survived by his wife who pregnant with their first child. As a result of the stress imposed on his wife it was determined that their daughter died in utero and was stillborn April 16, 1998.

Suspect Info: Caught in Mexico; Awaiting extradition
Chief of Police Speer was shot and killed after responding to a call at an equipment yard on the out-skirts of Calapatria, a tiny town in Imperial County. The exact circumstances are unknown at this time but Chief of Police Speer was found dead along the mother of the suspect, who fled across the US / Mexico border. Mexican authorities caught the suspect shortly thereafter and were talking with US authorities to have him returned to the US. Chief Speer has been chief of the department since 1988.

Officer Harvik died on April 14, 1998, from injuries he suffered in an accident on April 12, 1998. Officer Harvik had just finished assisting paramedics with a medical emergency and was following an ambulance when he lost control of his patrol vehicle, a Chevy Blazer, as he entered a sharp curve in the road. A passenger in the vehicle was also injured. Mart is approximately fifteen miles east of Waco, Texas.

Agent Thacker was shot and killed as he was driving to an undercover assignment with three other agents. All of the agents were in a caravan in separate vehicle with Agent Thacker in the last vehicle. Agent Thacker radioed to the other agents that a vehicle was driving erratically and a moment later radioed that he had been shot. The agent in front him looked in her rear view mirror and saw his vehicle swerve and then turned around to help him. The other two agents chased the vehicle which was driving erratically and arrested the driver, who was charged with murder. Agent Thacker is the first Kentucky ABC agent to be killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife and two year old daughter.

Sergeant Kelley died on April 17, 1998, from injuries sustained the day before during a training accident. A boat containing two other conservation officers overturned in turbulent water and Sergeant Kelley and another officer attempted a rescue. Sergeant Kelley's boat capsized as well. He was rescued after being submerged for fifteen minutes. He survived for 24 hours but succumbed to his injuries at 19:30 hours.

Suspect Info: Taken into custody
Officer Chetcuti was shot and killed after responding to backup another officer from a neighboring agency who was being shot at. A San Bruno police officer had stopped the suspect for not having current registration. As the officer approached the suspect's car, the suspect produced a high powered rifle and opened fire. The officer was able to escape injury by diving for cover in a drainage ditch and calling for help. Officer Chetcuti, a motorcycle, was the first on the scene. As he pulled up the suspect opened fire on him, striking him several times in the head and chest. It is unknown if Officer Chetcuti was able to return fire. The suspect then stole his weapon and fled the scene. A short chase ended when the suspect stopped and exited the vehicle with hands in the air. Officer Chetcuti is survived by his wife and three sons.




Officer Allen W. Gibson Jr.

Officer Gibson was shot and killed after confronting two male suspects while on routine foot patrol in a wooded area behind an apartment complex. Upon confronting the suspects a struggle ensued and Officer Gibson was shot once in the abdomen with his own weapon. The round struck the edge of his bullet proof vest and penetrated it. He was airlifted to a hospital in Petersburg, VA, where he died at approximately 13:00 hours. He is survived by an eight year old daughter. He had been with the six person department since February of 1998 and had been with another department for two years.

Lieutenant Davis died during a rescue attempt of a stranded surfer on April 26, 1997. Lieutenant Davis and three other members of the Ocean Shores PD Surf Rescue Team had gone out in the 10 to 12 foot swells in two separate boats. The inflatable boat in which Lieutenant Davis was in capsized and both occupants were thrown into the water. He was rescued and brought ashore by the US Coast Guard but was not breathing. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. All of the other people involved were rescued.




Officer Morris Cavaliere Jr.

Officer Cavaliere died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident a few hours earlier while he was escorting a wedding procession. The procession had slowed down and one of the vehicles stopped to let a car cross through an intersection. The car began to proceed through but the driver's view was obstructed and he was unable to see Officer Cavaliere coming up along the side. Officer Cavaliere's motorcycle struck the side of the car. The driver of the vehicle as another New Orleans police officer who was on his way to work. Officer Cavaliere is survived by his wife and father.
